About us
The bioeconomy is an important part of sustainable development and the fight against the climate crisis. The reason that the bioeconomy should be at the heart of the Czech Republic’s interest can be found in its potential to revolutionise traditional sectors - from agriculture to energy - and create sustainable economic models for current and future generations. This change is driven by the growing need to tackle climate change, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and protect natural resources, challenges facing the whole world. The bioeconomy involves the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and wastes into value-added products such as food, feed, bio-based products, and bioenergy.
In some European Union countries, the bioeconomy is already established as an important part of long-term national strategies, as can be seen in initiatives and policies that support its development and integration into different sectors. The European Union, through its Bioeconomy Strategy updated in 2018, recognises the bioeconomy as key to achieving sustainable economic growth and is therefore investing in research, innovation, and the application of bioeconomy principles in practice (European Commission, 2018). The Czech Republic, standing at the threshold of incorporating these principles into its documents, has a unique opportunity to draw on this international experience and adapt workable ideas in this area to support its own sustainable development in line with the Green Deal for Europe and its initiatives.
The Research Centre for Bioeconomics and Low-Carbon Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague plays a crucial role in the process of economic transformation. Its focus on research, applied projects, and education is fundamental to building capacity and raising public awareness of the importance of the bioeconomy. The Centre supports the transition to more sustainable models of biomass and renewable resource use, which brings economic opportunities and promotes innovation. In the context of the Czech Republic, where the bioeconomy’s potential has not yet been fully exploited, the Centre’s work represents a step forward towards an economy that is not only sustainable but also able to face future challenges. Collaboration among academia, industry, and government is key to the success of this transition, and the Centre is applying this throughout its activities. This collaboration and investment in the bioeconomy can help the Czech Republic not only to protect the environment but also to strengthen economic resilience and security.

Goals
The Research Centre for Bioeconomics and Low-Carbon Economics aims to promote sustainable development and the efficient use of renewable resources with an emphasis on minimising the carbon footprint. Its activities include the coordination of research, development, and implementation of innovative technologies and practices in areas such as bioenergy, bioeconomy, bioproducts, and sustainable agricultural production. The Centre seeks to bring together academia, industry, and government for the effective implementation of knowledge and technology into practice, thereby contributing to environmental protection, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating new economic opportunities.
Vision
The vision of the The Research Centre for Bioeconomics is to become a major player in the development and application of bioeconomic principles and low-carbon technologies in the Czech Republic and the wider international context.
The Centre aims to connect academia with solutions to support the effective implementation of new technologies and practices that reduce carbon footprint, while focusing on education and the development of professional competencies for future generations in the field of bioeconomy.
