Since the establishment of the faculty, the Department of Economics has been one of the basic workplaces determining the FEM profile. There are permanent changes in the structure of basic and optional subjects provided by the department in a direction of strengthening the section of general business activities, orientation towards issues of EU integration, globalization, etc. The teaching of compulsory and optional economic subjects is provided for students of practically all faculties and fields of full-time and combined studies, including consultation centers, lifelong learning, as part of bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies, as well as in summer schools. The department is responsible for the study field European Agrarian Diplomacy and significantly participates in the provision of teaching and organization of the study field Agricultural Economics and Management at the bachelor's and master's level. In the framework of improvement of the quality of studies, the department successfully completed a grant from the FRVŠ (Universities Development Fund) aimed at creating a laboratory of applied economics and quantitative analyses.
In the field of scientific research, the department is an important solution center for the issue of economic performance of the Czech agrarian sector analyzed within the framework of a number of research programs and their projects. However, the focus of research activities in 2008 was primarily concentrated on a solution of a new research plan "Resource economics of Czech agriculture and their effective use within multifunctional agri-food systems" for the period 2007-2012. In addition, the solution of projects within the GAČR and the 6th framework program of the EU was successfully completed. Results of the research were presented by the department's staff at international conferences at home and abroad.
The Department of Economics participated very substantially in events of faculty importance, e.g., at the international scientific conference Agrarian Perspectives XVII "Challenges for the 21st century", in arranging a summer school of American students, in a preparation of the Open Door Day, etc.
The department also showed relatively broad cooperation with the social practice. Members of the department cooperate with the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Information (IAEI) and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic on education and consultancy for entrepreneurs in the field of agribusiness.
It was successfully managed to stabilize a high scope and functional level of foreign partner relations. Study and work trips abroad, paid mainly from external sources, become an integral part of the inspiration and implementation of development plans in the field of education and scientific research. As part of the LLP ERASMUS program, the department closely cooperated with UNI Hohenheim, TU München, HU Berlin and BOKU Vienna. Within these agreements, exchange stays of pedagogues (providing lectures) and especially study stays of students and doctoral students were implemented.
In 2008, an implementation of joint scientific-pedagogical activities with NTPU and OCIT in Taipei and Taichung made significant progress in the field of mutual participation of workers at scientific conferences organized by the local faculty and Taiwanese partners. In cooperation with the international department of FEM, the department participated in the establishment of a Summer School for Taiwanese students, and studies of two experts in doctoral studies at FEM continued.
