Somatic hybridization

From the life > Somatic hybridization

You can see the specific results of somatic hybridization in the following collage demonstrating the characteristic features of the somatic hybrids of Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum + S. bulbocastanum (a,b). Figures c and d show flowers and inflorescences of S. bulbocastanum, while figures e and f demonstrate flowers and inflorescences of the dihaploid genotype S. tuberosum DH165. The pictures on the right show examples of the difference in tuber size of diploid and tetraploid clones of both somatic hybrids (genotypes marked REG XX F) and also the 4n autopolyploid S. bulbocastanum (REG5).

Differences are also manifested in the vegetative and production capabilities of somatic hybrids compared to the used parental genotypes, as can be seen from the following collage.

a) Solanum tuberosum DH165 (2n), b) somatic hybrid REG34F, c) Solanum bulbocastanum clone PIS 17
